The Garden of Eden
Undergraduate Final Exhibition Installation
University of Oklahoma, May, 2007
Serving as my premier installation initiative, "The Garden of Eden" is a conglomerate of sensory experiences through which the stereotypically presented Fashion Industry is critiqued. Comprised of acrylic painted masonite boards suspended from fishing wire, handpainted white foam core lined with flashing LED rope lights, an enlarged glossy replica of an earlier mixed media work entitled "Shh! You'll Wake the Girls!," and a custom-made soundtrack boasting the feminist musical talent of such artists as Peaches, Chix on Speed, and the Bow-Wow-Wow's, this work endeavors to capitalize on the hypnotic and fantastic chimera that is the "Fashion Show." While the six static and eerie beauties serve as delightful visual morsels for the eye, critical commentary found on the catwalk below stimulates the mind and highlights myriad quotes from such design moguls as Calvin Klein and Karl Lagerfeld, and incorporates Biblical texts relating to issues of femininity and an awareness of physical and aesthetical perception. "The Garden of Eden" is a three-dimensionally engaging successful addition to my body of work and will serve as a platform from which I will take my subject-matter onto new levels of exploration and experimentation. *
